Best Time to Visit Musandam: The Honest Guide
Most travel sites will tell you “October to April” and call it a day. And sure, that’s technically correct — but it’s not very helpful if you’re trying to figure out whether your trip, on your dates, is actually going to be good.
The truth is, the right time to visit Musandam depends entirely on what you’re after. A January camping night under the stars is a completely different experience from diving off a dhow into bath-warm August water. Neither is wrong — they’re just different trips for different people.
We run tours here every week of the year, so here’s what we genuinely see on the ground.
When to Visit Musandam?
The Sweet Spot: November to February
If you want the full picture — dhow cruise, mountain safari, hiking, camping, snorkeling — these four months are when everything comes together. Days sit comfortably between 20°C and 28°C. Warm enough to swim, cool enough to actually enjoy a hike without counting the minutes until shade. Nights on the water drop to around 15°C, so pack a light layer if you’re doing an overnight cruise.
The sea is calm and clear. Dolphins show up almost every morning, riding the bow of the boat like they own it. Snorkeling visibility around Telegraph Island regularly hits 10–15 metres. The drive up to Jebel Harim is spectacular without the heat taking the joy out of it.
The catch? Everyone else knows this too. December and January in particular get busy fast — especially around UAE long weekends and the Christmas break. If you’re planning for those months, book early. The good boats go first.
Shoulder Season: October, March & April
October is quietly one of the most underrated months to visit. The summer heat has broken, the crowds haven’t fully arrived yet, the sea is still warm from summer, and the fjords feel peaceful. If your dates are flexible and you want good weather without peak-season chaos, October is worth serious consideration.
March and April are the warm end of the good season. April gets up to 32–33°C, but the water temperature rises with it, which actually makes swimming more enjoyable. You’ll find slightly lower prices, fewer people, and — in April especially — you’re catching the last truly comfortable month for mountain hiking before summer sets in.
Summer (May to September): Hotter Than It Sounds, Better Than You Think
Let’s be straight with you: June, July, and August on land are genuinely tough. Temperatures hit 38–40°C. Hiking exposed mountain terrain in that heat isn’t just uncomfortable — it’s not smart. Mountain safaris in peak summer are something we actively steer people away from.
But here’s what most guides skip over: the water is incredible. Sea temperatures reach 30–32°C. The fjords are quiet — almost empty some days. Prices drop significantly. If your version of a Musandam trip is mostly time in or on the water — a dhow cruise, snorkeling, floating in a quiet bay with a cold drink — summer is genuinely a solid option.
May and September are the sweet spots within the hot season. The edge has come off the heat, the sea is warm and clear, and prices are still lower than peak season. For budget-conscious travellers who don’t mind warmth, these two months are a real hidden value.

A Note on Ramadan and Eid
Islamic holidays follow the lunar calendar, so the dates shift every year. It’s worth checking before you book.
During Ramadan, tours and hotels run as normal, but visitors should avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect for local customs.
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are major celebrations — accommodation fills up fast and border crossings can get busy. That said, the atmosphere is genuinely warm and festive, and it’s a meaningful time to experience Omani culture if you plan ahead.
What Kind of Trip Are You Planning?
You want the full experience — cruise, mountain safari, hiking, camping: Go November to February. No contest.
You mainly want a day on the water — swimming, snorkeling, relaxing: Any month honestly works. October, May, or September give you great water with fewer people and lower prices.
Travelling with kids: November to March is your window. Calm sea, reliable dolphin sightings, comfortable temperatures.
On a budget and heat doesn’t put you off: June to August. Lowest prices of the year, empty fjords. Just build your day around water activities and get indoors before midday.
Want the fjords to yourself: Late August or early September. Telegraph Island with barely another soul in sight.
The most common thing we hear from visitors who planned late? “I wish I’d booked sooner.” If you’re eyeing November through February — especially around a UAE long weekend or school holiday — the boats and packages you actually want fill up weeks in advance.
If your dates are flexible, tell us. We can usually find something that gives you the same experience with better availability, fewer crowds, and often a better price.
